Fearless predictions

Saturday, October 3rd, 2009

Remember, I’m a pessimist. Take these lightly. Also, almost all of my predictions turn out wrong.

Reports are that Fast Willie is out and Isaac Redman has been placed on the squad. Prediction #1) Redman will have no impact on this game.

#2) Mendenhall will get at least 65 yards rushing and a touchdown.

The defense, which will still be without Troy, will impress. I’m thinking 3.5 sacks between Woodley and Harrison for #3). If the Steelers lose, it won’t be because the defense didn’t show up.

#4) Cotter will bring his “A” game to the live blog.

And keep in mind what I said about my predictions (they are usually wrong, since I know you didn’t remember what I said) before you read the fifth, and final, one. #5) The Steelers will lose.

That being said …

Here we go.

Dennis Dixon is not the answer

The Wildcat.

Thank you Miami, and the recent release of Michael Vick, for making the Wildcat formation the hottest topic in the National Football League since Ray Lewis escaped murder charges.

Listen, the wildcat is exciting — in college. It can be pulled off in the NFL if used sparingly and with the right personnel. Miami has decent enough personnel in line to make it happen.

The Steelers, on the other hand, do not.

So it pains me to see someone legitimately questioning why the Steelers have not used Dennis Dixon in the wildcat formation yet. Apparently Ed Bouchette wrote something about it in his PG+ blog, but I’m too cheap to pay for that BS. Ed did write in his Q/A that “I was told when they drafted Dixon they might use him in various ways on their offense, but so far nothing. In my blog, I suggested ways in which he could be used.”

Of course, Ed suggesting ways he could be used in no way means he will be used as such.

It seems to me that no matter what formation you want to run, when the offensive line is as soft as a Tempur-pedic, you’re not going to be too successful. Please, I’m begging all Steelers fans that think this is a good idea, to reconsider. Because it’s not.

Dixon is not the answer to our run game. Isaac Redman is not the answer either. A better offensive line would be, but that’s not happening anytime soon.

And let’s hold off on the wildcat talk — at least until the Steelers draft Tim Tebow next year. He’s the answer to everything.

Running back poll results

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

I’m finally ending the second poll. Left it up for a bit just to see what the response might be. In it, I asked who you thought would finish the season as the Steelers leading rusher. The results:

Fast Willie … 12 votes
MEMO … 8 votes
Mendenhall … 6 votes
Other … 2 votes

The readers believe that Willie will remain the starter and get the carries needed to remain the leading rusher when the season ends. I was surprised to see MEMO leading this poll at one point, but I understand. Mendenhall of fame really hasn’t proven anything yet, but I wonder the most, is who the other two votes are for. Big Ben? Redman?

Time will tell with this. If you don’t already have the stats memorized, here’s how it looks after week 2:

Fast Willie … 66 yards on 27 carries
MEMO … 21 yards on 7 carries
Mendenhall of fame … 45 yards on 7 carries

As far as fantasy goes, Yahoo! is directing its players to drop Fast Willie and snatch another back, due the Steelers increasing problems to move the ball.

fantasyrb

In fact, the post indicates that Mendenhall is a strong buy. I don’t see it right now.

I’ve said numerous times that nothing is going to change without a different offensive line. But it also doesn’t help that the first two weeks came against some tough defenses in Tennessee and Chicago. I’m going to go out on a limb and say that someone on this team will rush for 100 yards against Cincinnati on Sunday. My best guess is that it will be Willie because he is the starter and remains Tomlin’s guy.

Fuck Yahoo. Start Willie.

New poll soon to be up. Give it a look.

Monday tabloids

Monday, September 14th, 2009

A rundown of some morning topics:

I think the biggest issue is that the run game sucks and will continue to suck all season long. As Tommy Gun said, you don’t make a terrible o-line better by simply paying the same guys more money. This is not a dominating front. If we’re going to run, it’ll be because the pass set it up. Let’s accept that fact and move on from the traditional Steelers smash mouth philosophy. Sorry, Yinzers, but we are what we are. And we have a legitimate passing attack.

Branching even more on this. Some dude from New York asks the all-knowing Bouchette whether or not the Steelers will bring up Isaac Redman from the practice squad, because  he’s the answer to all of our problems.

Q: With the difficulty the running game is having, especially in short yardage situations, at what point do you think Isaac Redman would be brought up from the practice squad?

Michael Pearsall, Albany, N.Y.

BOUCHETTE: If what we saw Thursday night is any indication, I believe the Steelers will look for help anywhere they can get it. I would not expect them to sign Redman from the practice squad next week, but if this continues they would have to at least give him a try. However, unless the offensive line blocks for the run better than it did against the Titans, I don’t know if Jim Brown could help.

Thankfully, Bouchette sets him straight. The Steelers have three very talented and different backs in Parker, Mendenhall and Moore. Redman is not needed. The o-line needs to change if you want to dominate with the run. I can’t say that enough.

Apparently some group was outside the Carnegie Science Center protesting Mike Vick. Why? I don’t know — I didn’t bother reading the entire story. I thought we didn’t sign him and Philly did? Thanks, Santonio for even making Vick a story in Pittsburgh.

…and this is why they are the Bungles.

Here we go.

The Teams They Are A-Changin’

Sunday, September 6th, 2009

After Thursday’s shalacking of Carolina down in the low country, the Steelers staff spent Friday morning trimming the fat from a surprisingly lean Pittsburgh team. The squad, which started Friday at 75 men deep had been cut to the league standard 53 on Friday morning, a day earlier than the league mandates.

While reports of who stayed and who go-ed trickled slowly to the media, our own Slash liveblogged Tomlin’s press conference on Friday and broke the story of Frank the Tank’s secured spot as Steelers starting FB.

Redman shines, Method Man has no comment (Preseason Game 1)

Friday, August 14th, 2009

At some point last night, somewhere among Tom Brady’s touchdown passes and Fan’s Best Friend Mike Vick inking a 2-year deal, the Steelers played a football game. While Slash, yours truly and the twitter faithful didn’t miss a snap, we realize there might be some of you out there that didn’t catch the whole game. And, let’s face it, this was about the most boring game in the history of recreational activities. I’ve watched T-Ball games with more drama.

Without further ado, here’s how it all went down…
